Early Life
He was born on 8 August 1981 in Basel, is a city in northwestern Switzerland on the River Rhine. His father Robert Federer is from Berneck & his mother Lynette Federer is from Kempton Park, Gauteng, in South Africa. He has one older sister, Diana.
Career
He entered the top 100 rankings for the first time on 20 September 1999 and started at the 1999 Marseille Open defeating the reigning champion of the 1998 French Open, Spaniard Carlos Moyá. His international breakthrough came at the 2001 Wimbledon Championships, where the 19-year-old Federer faced the four-time defending champion and all-time Grand Slam leader American former world No. 1 Pete Sampras.
He won his first Grand Slam singles title at Wimbledon, beating American Andy Roddick in the semifinals and Australian retired tennis player Mark Philippoussis in the final. In 2004, Federer won three Grand Slam singles titles for the first time in his career and became the first person to do so since Swedish Mats Wilander in 1988.
The 2006 season was the best season for his career. In November 2011, ranked his 2006 season as statistically the second-best season of all time during the Open Era, behind Australian former tennis player Rod Laver’s Grand Slam year of 1969.
