He is an American investor, Philanthropist & Chairman and CEO of American multinational holding company “Berkshire Hathaway”.Warren Buffett is one of the most successful investors in the world and according to Forbes World’s Billionaires List May 2021 he is the sixth wealthiest person in the world.
Early life
He was born on 30th August 1930 in Omaha the largest city in the United States of Nebraska. He started his primary education at Rose Hill Elementary School. After that, he finished his Elementary School in Alice Deal Junior High School and become a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Washington DC in 1947.
After that, he took his admission at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and after two years of study he Joint the Alpha Sigma Phi, which was a men’s college. At the age of 19, he transferred to the University of Nebraska where he becomes graduate with a bachelor of science in Business Administration. After graduation, he tried to take his admission at the Harvard Business School but rejected. So that he joined Columbia Business School at Columbia University. In 1951 he becomes a master of science in economics.
Carrier
He started his professional career in his childhood by selling chewing gum, Coca-Cola & and weekly magazines door to door. He has also worked in his grandfather grocery store. He has always been shown his interest in business and investing. He inspired by a book he borrowed from the Omaha public library at a very young age “One Thousand Ways to Make $1000”.
At the age of eleven, he purchased three shares of United State based refiner and transporter “Citgo Petroleum Corporation”. He started earning approximately $ 175 (Rs 12,788 ) every month by delivering the newspaper. At the same time, he purchased a land of $ 1200 (Rs 87,687) from his savings. At the time he finished college he made his saving approximately $ 107,000 (Rs 78.16 Lacs) in today’s amount.
He started working at the Buffett-Falk & Co and remain as a salesman till 1954. After that he joined Graham-Newman Corp. as a securities analyst, he worked there till 1956. He then joined Buffett Partnership, Ltd. as a general partner & worked there till 1969. In 1970 he becomes Chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway Inc.
He becomes Millionaire in 1962 and took control of a textile manufacturing firm Berkshire Hathaway Inc. He started buying shares in Berkshire from Industrialist Seabury Stanton. Gradually he started investing in a Private business such as Hochschild, Kohn and Co, & Baltimore department store.
In 1973 he started buying stocks in The Washington Post Company. In 1977 he purchased the American daily Newspaper The buffalo news for $ 32.5 million (Rs 2,36.91 Cr).
In 1979 he started holding shares in American multinational commercial broadcast television network “ABC”. According to American Media company Capital Cities/ABC Inc, he purchases it for $ 3.5 billion (Rs 2,55,16.57 Cr) on 18th March 1985.
In 1987 his Company Berkshire Hathaway purchased a 12% share in Salomon Inc. The next year in 1988 his company started buying stock in American multinational beverages company Coca-Cola’s 7% share for $ 1.02 billion (Rs 74,33.96 Cr).
He become when his company Berkshire Hathaway Started selling its share which closed at $ 7,175 (Rs 5.23 Lacs) per share.
In 2008 he becomes the wealthiest person in the world with a net worth of $ 62 billion (Rs 45,20,14.10 Cr) overtaking Bill Gates who was number one on the Forbes list for continuously thirteen years.
In 2009 he purchased the stock of Burlington Northern Santa Fe, LLC for $ 34 billion (Rs 24,77,85.54 Cr). In November 2011 he holds the stocks of American multinational technology company International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) of $ 11 billion (Rs 8,01,61.95 Cr).
On 14th August 2014 per share price of his company Berkshire Hathaway touches $ 200,000 (Rs 1.45 Cr) making his company worth $ 328 billion ( Rs 2,39,01,85.20 Cr). In 2018 Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison becomes the third wealthiest person behind him 2018.
Personal life
In 1952 he married American activist Susan Thompson at the Dundee Presbyterian Church. Next year they gave birth to their first child daughter Susan Alice. Two years later of their first child, they give birth to their second child as a boy named Howard Graham. They gave birth to their second boy Peter in 1958.
After the death of Susan in July 2004 on his 76th birthday in 2006 he married long time friend Astrid Menks, who was then 60 years old.
Social responsibility and Philanthropy
In 2007 his name was listed on American news magazine “Times magazine” in 100 most influential people in the world. In June 2006 he announced that to give 83% of his fortune to the American private Foundation The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation making it the largest charitable donation in history.
On 9th December 2010, Bill Gates and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg along with him has signed The Giving Pledge. In this initiative, they promised to donate at least 50% of their fortune and also invite the world’s wealthiest people to do the same for making this world a better place for all human beings.
