She is an American professional tennis player who has a career-high Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) ranking of No. 4 in women’s singles. She is the rising “WTA Player of the Year”, which she earned by winning the 2020 Australian Open and finishing runner-up to Iga Świątek at the 2020 French Open. She has won five WTA singles titles in total & has also won two WTA doubles titles, including the 2019 China Open at the Premier Mandatory level with Bethanie Mattek-Sands.

Early Life

She was born on 14th November 1998 in Moscow, the capital and largest city of Russia. Her father’s name is  Alexander and her mother’s name is Svetlana Kenin. She started playing tennis at the age of five, & got inspiration from her father who had played recreationally. She had success in tennis at a young age, which gets widespread attention in the tennis community and helped put her on the covers of tennis magazines. 

She began playing in United States Tennis Association (USTA) girls’ 10-and-under tournaments at the age of seven and became the top-ranked player in Florida in that division. She later was ranked No. 1 in the USTA national rankings for each of the 12, 14, 16, and 18-and-under divisions. She had the opportunity to interact with American former world No. 1 professional tennis player Jim Courier against American professional tennis player Venus Williams and American retired tennis player. Todd Martin as part of an exhibition event, and receiving a tour of the Miami Open from Belgian professional tennis player Kim Clijsters.

Career

She started playing low-level tournaments on the ITF circuit in 2013 and won her first two professional matches at the age of fourteen. With her wild card from winning the USTA junior national championship, she made her Grand Slam debut at the 2015 US Open, losing her opening match to Colombian retired tennis player. The next year, she won her first two ITF titles, the first at a $25K (Rs 18.55 Lacs) event in Wesley Chapel in Florida and the second at a $50K (Rs 37.10 Lacs) event in Sacramento in California. At the US Open, she lost her first-round match to Czech professional tennis player Karolina Pliskova her only WTA Tour-level match of the year.

After beginning the 2017 season ranked outside the top 200, she gradually rose up the WTA rankings throughout the year while playing exclusively on the professional circuit. She comes into the top 150 in August after successful results during the summer, including winning an ITF $60K  (Rs 44.53 Lacs) tournament at Stockton and finishing runner-up at the Lexington $60K (Rs 44.53 Lacs) event.

At the 2017 US Open, she advanced beyond the first round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time, defeating compatriots American professional tennis player Lauren Davis and American professional tennis player Sachia Vickery before losing to the 2006 champion Russian former professional tennis player Maria Sharapova in the third round. She finished the year ranked No. 108 in the world.

She improved in 2019, rising from the top 50 at the start of the year to on the cusp of the top ten by the end of the season. She started her year by winning her first WTA doubles title at the Auckland Open alongside Canadian tennis player Eugenie Bouchard., a Premier Mandatory event. she was also named the second alternate at the WTA Finals, behind Dutch former professional tennis player Kiki Bertens. 

After Japanese professional tennis player Naomi Osaka and Canadian professional tennis player. Bianca Andreescu both withdrew. she had the opportunity to play one match, losing to the defending champion Ukrainian professional tennis player Elina Svitolina. She finished the year ranked No. 14 in singles and No. 39 in doubles. She also received the WTA Most Improved Player of the Year award for her breakthrough season, becoming the first American player to win the award since Serena Williams in 1999. At the 2020 Australian Open Spanish professional tennis player Garbine Muguruza lost it to 14th her in three sets.
