Early Life

She was born in Saginaw city in the U.S.State of Michigan on 26th September 1981. Her father’s name is Richard Dove Williams Jr & her mother Oracene Price both are American tennis coaches.

Her parents homeschooled her with her sister, Venus. When she was nine years old her family moved from Compton to West Palm Beach Florida so that she could attend the tennis academy of American tennis coach Rick Macci.


Her first professional tournament was in October 1995 at the National Bank Cup in Quebec, Canada. She lost in the first round of qualifying to the American player Annie Miller. The highest-ranked Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina has also won against her.

In 1998  at The Sydney International she defeated No. 3 Davenport in the quarterfinals. In the same year, she made her debut in the  Grand Slam tournament at the 1998 Australian Open where she defeated Romanian Irina Spirlea in the first round. At sixteen years old she completed  “Battle of the Sexes”, along with her sister  Venus Williams against the German player Karsten Braasch at the 1998 Australian Open. 

In 2001 She with her sister won the doubles title at the latter tournament, becoming only the fifth doubles team in history to win all four Grand Slam women’s doubles titles during their career. 

Next year at The 2002 Wimbledon Championships she won tennis’s oldest championship for the first time in her life, defeating her sister Venus to win a Grand Slam singles title. This victory earned her at the world No. 1 ranking for the first time. Along with this, she becomes only the third African American woman to hold that ranking.

At the 2004 Miami Open, she won the title for the third consecutive year. She finished 2004 ranked at No. 7.

She started her 2006 at the 2006 Australian Open but she lost to Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova in the third round. Her first tournament of 2013 was The 2013 Brisbane International where she won the title without dropping a set. By defeating Czechs  Petra  Kvitova she returned to the No. 1.

After the US Open, Williams beat Jelena Jankovic to win the China Open in Beijing in 2013. She completed her WTA Championships undefeated winning the final against Li Na, to become the first person to defend the title since Justine Henin in 2007. She finished as the year-end No. 1. She was also named the 2013 ITF World Champion, for the fourth time she has been given the World Champion’s crown.

In the 2014 US Open singles title which she won without having dropped a set. With this victory, She stands with Chris Evert for most singles titles won by a woman at the US Open in the Open Era.  She collected $4,000,000 (Rs 28.97 Cr), the biggest payday in tennis history. Spanish professional tennis player Garbine Muguruza has been defeated her in the second round of match 2014’s French Open.

In the 2015 French Open, she defeated Victoria Azarenka in the third round. She became the first woman in the Open Era to win 50 matches at all four of the Grand Slams. She defeated Lucie Safarova of The Czech Republic in three sets to win her third French Open and 20th Grand Slam singles title. 

She suffered back to back early exits at Indian Wells and Miami, losing in the third round at Indian Wells to her sister Venus and the first round at Miami to 2018 Indian Wells champion Naomi Osaka.  

In The 2019 Australian Open she defeated German’s Tatjana Maria, Canadian Eugenie Bouchard & Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska in the first three rounds, before defeating world number one Romanian Simona Halep. Canadian professional tennis player Bianca Andreescu was the champion at the US Open and the Canadian Open in the same year, having defeated her to win both titles.

In The 2020 Auckland Open, she defeated American Jessica Pegula in the final. She also reached the finals in the doubles tournament with Danish player Caroline Wozniacki & the pair were defeated by American Asia Muhammad  & Taylor Townsend. Czech professional tennis player Karolina Pliskova’s victory denied German Angelique Kerber the opportunity to take over Serena.

In the new edition in the WTA in 2021 the Yarra Valley Classic she withdrew prior to her semifinal match against the Australian Ashleigh Barty for a right shoulder injury. American Professional Sofia Kenin also received the WTA Most Improved Player of the Year award for her breakthrough season, becoming the first American player to win the award after her. British professional tennis player Emma Raducanu defeated Fernandez in what was the first all-teenage women’s singles final since the 1999 US Open between her and Martina Hingis.

She married social media platform named Reddit co-founder Alexis Kerry Ohanian on November 16th 2017 in New Orleans.
