She was born on the 4th of August 1956, in New York. Her parents Margaret Cushing and Hendricks Hallett Whitman, Jr. Whitman is also the great-great-granddaughter of U.S. Senator Charles B. Farwell of Illinois.

She was an executive in The Walt Disney Company. In the 1990s, she was an executive for DreamWorks, Procter & Gamble, and Hasbro & was president and CEO of eBay from 1998 to 2008.
During her years with the company, she oversaw its expansion from 30 employees and $4 million ( INR 29.83 Cr) in annual revenue to more than 15,000 employees and $8 billion ( INR 5,96,69.28 Cr) in annual revenue.
