Who is Katie Ledecky?

She is an American competitive swimmer who has won seven Olympic gold medals and fifteen world championship gold medals. She is considered the greatest swimmer of all time and is the record holder of the women’s 400-, 800-, and 1500-meter freestyle (long course).

At the 2012 London Olympics which was her first international debut, she won the gold medal in the women’s 800-metre freestyle. Her success makes her Swimming World’s “World Swimmers of the Year” five times. She has won “Associated press athlete of the Year” of 2017, “Champion of Champions” in 2014 & 2017 by L’Équipe, a French daily newspaper, “USOPC Athlete of the Year” in 2013,2016 & 2017 & “Sportswoman of the Year” Award in 2017 by the Women’s Sports Foundation (WSF).

Early Life

She was born on 17th March 1997 in Washington, D.C, the Capital city of the United States. Her father’s name is  David Ledecky & mother Mary Gen.She started swimming at only six years of age due to the motivation of her elder brother Michael, and her mother, who swam for The “University of New Mexico”.

She studied at Little Flower School and becomes graduate from the Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart in 2015. In 2012 She trained with the Nation’s Capital Swim Club Under coach Yuri Sugiyama. She also swam for Palisades Swim Team in Cabin John, Maryland. She has also received an athletic scholarship from Stanford University. In December 2016 she was selected for ship sponsor of the US Navy aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN-80), along with American artistic gymnast Simone Biles. In December 2020 she completed the Bachelor of Arts in psychology from “Stanford University” & she becomes graduate in June 2021.

She becomes and professional swimmer At a very young age and in the 2013 world championships she won 4 Gold medals in 400m freestyle, 800m freestyle, 1500m freestyle and 4x200m freestyle. The next year 2014 Pan Pacific Championships, she won five Gold medals this time, including  200m freestyle, in addition to 400m, 800m, 1500m and the relay.

At the 2015 World Championships, she again won the Gold and breaks her won records set at previous events. At the 2017 World Championships, she won five gold medals including a gold in 4x100m freestyle this time. She won three Gold Medals, one Silver, one Bronze at the 2018 Pan Pacific Championships and one Gold and two Silver at the 2019 World Championships.

Olympic Performance

She made a world record when she won an Olympic gold medal at the age of fifteen. She won the Competition by approximately four seconds & at the 2012 London Olympics, she failed milliseconds short of the then-800m freestyle world record. She won four Gold medals at the 2016 Rio Olympics, 200m freestyle, 400m freestyle, 800m freestyle, 4x 200m freestyle along with a Silver medal at the 4x100m freestyle.

After that, she qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. At the Tokyo Olympics 2021 in the Final on 28th July 2021, she won gold in the Women’s 1500m Freestyle Final at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre.
