He is an American businessman & one of the richest billionaire business magnate, software developer, investor & co-founder of Microsoft Corporation. Bill Gates holds the position of the largest individual shareholder in the same organization till May 2014. According to Forbes real-time data published on 24th May 2021, he is the fourth wealthiest person in the world.

Early Life

He was born on 28th October 1955 in Seattle, Washington, which is a city on the  West Coast of the United States. His father William Henry Gates II was a lawyer & mother Mary  Maxwell Gates, was an American businesswoman. At the age of thirteen, he enrolled his name in the Lakeside School in Seattle, Washington. When he graduated from Lakeside School in 1973 he was a National merit scholar & scored 1590 out of 1600 on the Scholastic Assessment Test. 

After that, he admitted himself to Harvard College in 1973 & took mathematics and graduate-level computer science courses. He took a leave from Harvard to work with Allen at MITS in November 1975. They formed their partnership company  “Micro-Soft”, and their first office was in Albuquerque. After a year they registered their official business name as Microsoft on November 26, 1976. After that, he never goes back to  Harvard to complete his studies.

The leading supplier of computer equipment to commercial enterprises at the time approached Microsoft in July 1980 regarding the software for its upcoming personal computer. The contract earned Microsoft a very small revenue but  It was the prestige brought to Microsoft by IBM’s adoption of their operating system that would be the origin of Microsoft’s made it to the leading software company in the world. Gradually Microsoft becomes the major software company in the world.

He first launches their first retail version of Microsoft Windows on November 20, 1985. His primary responsibility for Microsoft’s product strategy from the company’s founding in 1975 till 2006.

On June 15th 2006 he announced that he would divide out of his role at Microsoft to dedicate more time for charity works. He then divided his responsibilities between  American software industry entrepreneur  Ray Ozzie & Senior Advisor to the CEO at  Microsoft Craig Mundie. It took two years to transfer fully his duties to them & is completed on 27th June 2008. 

On 9th December 2010 American business magnet, software developer Bill Gates & American Business tycoon and philanthropist Warren Buffett along with Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg has signed The Giving Pledge to motivate the worlds wealthiest person to donate his maximum wealth for making the world a better place for all human beings. In 2011 American multinational investment bank Citigroup estimated that Australian Industrialist Gina Rinehart is just behind Mexican business magnate Carlos Slim whose net worth was $ 74 billion (Rs 54,86,66.34 Cr) & with him with net worth was $ 56 billion (Rs 41,52,06.96 Cr).

According to the daily ranking of the world’s richest people, The Bloomberg Billionaires Index was the world’s highest-earning billionaire in 2013 with a net worth of $ 78.5 billion (Rs 57,90,94.50 Cr).On 4th February 2014, he stepped down as chairman of Microsoft to become “technology advisor”. 

He always believes that global warming & global access to energy both is a critical issue. For solving this issue he always advises governments and the private sector to invest in research and development to make clean, reliable energy cheaper.

In 1994 he donated some of his Microsoft stocks to create the “William H. Gates Foundation”. In 2000 with his wife he donated his $ 5 billion (Rs 3,69,11.37 Cr) stock value to create The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which was the world’s wealthiest charitable foundation. Through his foundation, he also donated  $20 million (Rs 1,47.61 Cr) to Carnegie Mellon University for a new building to be named Gates Center for Computer Science which opened in 2009.

As of 2007, this foundation was the second-most charitable foundation in America, having given over $28 billion (Rs 20,67,24.00 Cr)  to charity & it works for the global problem that is ignored by governments and other organizations. The foundation has five different parts for serving as a global foundation such as Global Development Division, Global Health Division, United States Division, and Global Policy & Advocacy Division.

On 9th December 2010, he along with his wife and investor Warren Buffett each signed a commitment they called the Giving Pledge It is a campaign to encourage extremely wealthy people to contribute a majority of their wealth to charitable reason.

On August 25th 2018 he distributed $600,000 (Rs 4.43 cr)   through his foundation via UNICEF which is helping flood-affected victims in Kerala India. The Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison becomes the third wealthiest person behind him in 2018.

Personal Life

He married American Philanthropist Melinda Ann Gates on the Hawaiian Island on 1st January 1994. The couple has three children Jennifer Gates, Rory  Gates and Phoebe Gates. Their residence is in Lake Washington a residential city on the eastside of Medina of  Washington. The total estimated value of the 66,000-square-foot area is $ 147.5 Million (Rs 10,88.69 Cr). This residence included a swimming pool with an underwater music system, gym and a  dining room. They both announced that they had decided to divorce following 27 years of marriage, and 34 years as a couple. The couple said they will keep working together on charitable efforts. 

In March 2010 he was the second wealthiest person behind Mexican business magnate Carlos Slim according to the Bloomberg Billionaires List. In October 2017 he was surpassed by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos as the richest person in the world.

He has also held the record of top rank on the list of The World’s Billionaires for 18 years out of the past 23.
