Early Life

Zegler was born on 3rd May 2001 in Hackensack, New Jersey to her parents Craig and Gina. She is of Colombian descent on her mother’s side, and of Polish on her father’s side. She has an older sister named Jacqueline. Grown-up in Clifton, New Jersey, she went to St. Philip the Apostle Preparatory School. After this, she went to Immaculate Conception High School, a Roman Catholic all-girls college-preparatory school. She has performed in a number of musical productions, including “Beauty and the Beast,” “The Little Mermaid,” “42nd Street,” and “Shrek the Musical.” After that she played Cosette in “Les Misérables” and Millie in “Thoroughly Modern Millie.” She graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in 2019.

Career

Zegler first came to Global attention through her YouTube channel, which she launched in the summer of 2015. She has posted both lifestyle videos and covers of popular songs. She has also been active on Twitter, with her cover of “Shallow” from the 2018 film version of “A Star is Born” reaching more than 11 million views.

West Side Story” Background

In  2018, a sixteen-year-old gave her reaction to an open casting call on Twitter for Steven Spielberg’s upcoming film adaptation of the musical “West Side Story.” One year before this, she had played the lead role of Maria Vasquez in the production of “West Side Story” at the Bergen Performing Arts Center. In the film, she stars as Maria, with Ansel Elgort playing her ill-fated lover. 

West Side Story” Success

A universal success, Spielberg’s “West Side Story” earned so many prestigious awards, including seven Oscar nominations. Zegler herself received many honours, including Best Actress from the National Board of Review. In January of 2022, she won her biggest award, the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture  Comedy or Musical. With her win, she became the youngest recipient of that award at twenty years old. She also became the first actress of Colombian ancestry to win in the category. In recognition of her success, she was named to Forbes magazine’s “30 Under 30” list.

She was revealed in an interview to be cast as Snow White in Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation back in June of 2021, taking on the role as the first Disney princess, with the original film being released around eighty-five years ago. The live-action adaptation was announced in 2016, with Marc Webb set to be directing the film and the live-action Aladdin songwriters, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, signed for the music. November 2021 saw Snow White reveal more about the project, with Greta Gerwig tapped to write the film’s script after her success with the likes of Little Women and Lady Bird. It was also confirmed that Gal Gadot has joined the cast, portraying the Evil Queen.

After the “West Side Story,” she started filming the DC Comics superhero film sequel “Shazam! Fury of the Gods.” Her next project started “Snow White,” Disney’s live-action adaptation of its 1937 animated film. She played the titular princess, while Gal Gadot played the Evil Queen.

Zegler has been involved in other media other than the movie. In 2021, she appeared in two episodes of the television talk show “The George Lucas Talk Show.” The same year, she also participated in a virtual close reading of the play “Newton’s Cradle: A Ghost Story,” and acted in the main role on the podcast “Princess of South Beach.” As a singer, she has released the non-album single “Let Me Try” and the “West Side Story” single “Balcony Scene (Tonight).” She has also appeared in the 2020 music video for Kathryn Gallagher’s song “Nostalgic for the Moment (Dance Party Edition).”
