Who is Bianca Andreescu?

She is a Canadian professional tennis player who is the youngest ranked in the WTA top 20 rankings. She has achieved a career-high ranking of world No.4 in October 2019. Currently, she is ranked at no. 7 in the world. She has won three singles titles in her short career so far. The 2019 Indian Welles was her breakthrough tournament, where she became the first wild card to reach the finals in Indian Wells’ history. The Canadian defeated German professional tennis player Angelique Kerber to win her maiden Tour-level title.

She was the fifth highest-paid female athlete in the world, earning $ 8.9 million (Rs  66.17 Cr) of which $4 million (Rs 29.74 Cr) came through endorsements. She has a career-high ranking of No. 4 in the world and is the highest-ranked Canadian in the history of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA). She was the champion at the US Open and the Canadian Open in 2019, having defeated American professional tennis player Serena Williams to win both titles.

Early Life

She was born on 16th June 2000 in Mississauga, Ontario to her parents  Nicu and Maria Andreescu who was emigrated from Romania to Canada in 1994 when her father accepted a job in the country. Her father works as a mechanical engineer at an automotive company & her mother had worked at a bank in Romania. She started playing tennis in Pitești at the age of seven. She was coached by Gabriel Hristache, who is a friend of her father. 

Career

She started playing on the ITF Women’s Circuit in July 2015 & finished runner-up to No. 155 American professional tennis player Alexa Glatch in her professional $25K (INR 18.58 Lacs)  event in Gatineau. She missed most of the first half of 2016 due to injury. After returning she began having success at ITF events in Canada. During the singles event, she defeated No. 113  American professional tennis player Jennifer Brady in a third-set tiebreak in the semifinals before losing to No. 111 CiCi Bellis, in the final.

She continued her amazing performance with a semifinal at the 2019 Mexican Open She then had an even larger achievement at the Premier Mandatory Indian Wells Open, where she won her first WTA Tour title. She defeated four top-20 players in the last four rounds, including No. 6 Ukrainian professional tennis player Elina Svitolina and No. 8 German professional tennis player Angelique Kerber in the semifinals and final, respectively, both in three sets. Polish professional tennis player Iga Swiatek became the fourth teenager to win a WTA 1000 event, alongside Victoria Azarenka, Swiss professional Belinda Bencic along with her.

She became the first wildcard women’s singles champion in tournament history since Serena Willams in 1999. This title also took her to No. 24 in the WTA rankings. She defeated Kerber again at the Miami Open a week later. Her shoulder injury kept her out of all but one tournament until August. She attempted an early comeback at the French Open but ultimately withdrew after one match. She made her next return at her home tournament, the Canadian Open, where she won her second high-level Premier tournament of the year. 

Her 17-match win was ended in the quarterfinals of the China Open by No. 4 Naomi Osaka She closed out the year at the WTA Finals, where she withdrew after two losses to Simona Halep and Pliskova due to a knee injury. At the end of the season, she was awarded the Lou Marsh Trophy as Canada’s top athlete of the year & was the first tennis player to win the award. She will be among 16 women’s players to compete in Charleston 2019 US Open held since the season was derailed in mid-March by the Covid-19 crisis.

In late March 2021, she participated in the Miami Open. Receiving a first-round bye, she defeated Czech tennis player Tereza Martincova in straight sets. She would go on to record three-set wins over American professional tennis player Amanda Anisimova, Spanish professional tennis player Garbine Muguruza Spanish tennis player Sara Sorribes Tormo, and Greek professional tennis player Maria Sakkari to set up a clash with world No. 1, Australian professional tennis player Ashleigh Barty in the final. However, she was ultimately forced to retire, down 3–6, 0–4. British professional tennis player Emma Raducanu is only the second player after her to win on her debut at the US Open.
