Early Life
She was born on 25th July 1995 to her mother Angelikí Kanellopoúlou, a former top-50 tennis player, and father Konstantinos Sakkaris, in Athens. She has two brothers Yannis and a sister named Amanda. She was introduced by her parents to tennis at age six years old and moved to Barcelona at age eighteen years old for training. She has grown up seeing her favourite players Serena Williams, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. She currently resides in Monte Carlo.
Career
Sakkari started her tennis career at a very early age & made her debut on ITF Circuit in 2010 at $10k ( INR 7.64 lacs) ITF/Mytilini‐GRE and played her first WTA tournament in 2012. She failed to qualify four times till 2015 at the WTA level before making her Grand Slam debut at Us Open.
She started her 2016 by falling in qualifying at Brisbane and Hobart, but then she managed to post her first Grand Slam main draw win against Wang. She then became the first woman from Greece to win a main draw match at a Slam since Daniilidou d. Karolina Pliskova at 2013 Australian Open. In 2016 she reached the first career WTA quarterfinal in Istanbul after qualifying to enter the main draw.
She made the second round at Wimbledon, and after the Championships, she collected a single main draw win in Tashkent. She also played the main draw again at the 2016 Gstaad, New Haven, Tokyo Japan Open. Putintseva, Seoul, Hong Kong. 2017 was her turning point season as she reached the third round at three of the four majors, at the Australian Open Wimbledon and US Open. In 2017, she enjoyed good results on grass, reaching QFs at Nottingham.
She made her first WTA semifinal by beating Caroline Wozniacki In Wuhan. It was her first win over a top 25 and also the biggest victory for a Greek tennis player since August 2005 when Eleni Daniilidou beat then number four Svetlana Kuznetsova in Los Angeles. Sakkari finished the season at No.51 and became the third highest-ranked Greek player, behind her mother, Angeliki Kanellopoulou and Eleni Daniilidou.
In the 2018 Indian Wells, She managed to beat Donna Vekić, & Ashleigh Barty along with CoCo Vandeweghe. She lost in the fourth round against Naomi Osaka. At the Miami Open, & defeated Aleksandra Krunić and Anett Kontaveit. She then reached the third round where she lost to Monica Puig. She started her clay-court season by reaching her first semifinal in 2018 in (Istanbul) where she beat Çağla Büyükakçay, Aleksandra Krunić and Arantxa Rus. and then had her second win against a top-ten player by beating Karolína Plíšková.
On grass court, After that, she lost to Elina Svitolina in the third round. Back in Europe, she only played in one tournament. She played at Kremlin Cup, where in the first round, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova beat her in three sets. For the first time in her career, she qualified for some year-end championships. At WTA Elite Trophy, she lost both matches in her group, to Elise Mertens and Aryna Sabalenka.
She started off the season in 2021 making the quarterfinals of Abu Dhabi without dropping a set with wins over Anastasia Potapova, Coco Gauff and Garbiñe Muguruza. She then came from a set down to upset top seed Sofia Kenin. There she faced Naomi Osaka who had not lost a match in over a year and was on a 23 match-winning streak. She caused one of the upsets of the tournament by defeating the second seed in straight sets. She then faced Bianca Andreescu for a place in the final but was herself defeated in a third-set tiebreaker.
In September 2021, She beat Karolína Plíšková to earn a place in only the second Grand Slam semifinal of her career at the US Open to play qualifier from Great Britain Emma Raducanu. At the Ostrava Open, she reached the final defeating the top seed, Iga Swiatek. She improved to 2-0 against Swiatek after her win in the French Open quarterfinals at Roland Garros earlier in the year. Sakkari entered the Indian Wells Open. She defeated Kateřina Siniaková, Petra Kvitová, qualifier Daria Saville and Elena Rybakina to reach her first Indian Wells semifinals. Then she beat defending champion Paula Badosa to reach the first WTA 1000 final of her career.
She won one WTA singles title in the 2019 Morocco Open & reached the finals of 26 ITF matches, but she won 7 finals in singles and 5 finals in doubles. She performed her best Grand slam performance in the 2020 Australian and US Open. She then reached her career-high singles ranking No 20 On 2020 February 24.
