Early Life
She was born on 6th April 1978 in Chicago, the most populous city in the U.S. state of Illinois, United States.
Her Mexican-American father and an African-American mother. Her father Hugo was a counsellor at the University of Illinois at Chicago who was also a musician, and her mother was an artist. She grew up in the Chicago community area of Hyde Park.
Her parents sent her to the Model Secondary School for the Deaf in Washington, DC, where she was among deaf and hard-of-hearing peers. She started learning the arts, starting with ceramics and becoming involved with drama.
After graduating from CSUN, she went to Hunter College in New York to study education to become a children’s author. After completing her Master’s Degree in Education in 2005. She was also involved with deaf community theatre and film work for friends. For taking care of her children, she left her teaching job.
Career
She joined the production of the 2017 American mystery drama film directed by Todd Haynes “Wonderstruck” as a consultant and was ultimately cast in a small role.
She was a fan of the TV series The Walking Dead and submitted an audition tape to be cast in the series. She was cast as Connie and started her role in the show’s ninth season, which premiered in October 2018.
In 2018, she played the character of Sarah Norman in the movie ‘Children of a Lesser God’. In the same year, she has given an audition to be a part of the series ‘The Walking Dead’.
She has also appeared in other television shows like ‘Legacies’, ‘New Amsterdam’, and ‘Sound of Metal’. She will be playing the character of Makkari in the 2021 upcoming movie ‘Eternals’.
In 2020, she received the SAG-AFTRA Harold Russell Award at the 41st Media Access Awards. In the same year, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts was selected as a 2020 Breakthrough performer along with 33 other talents in film, television, and games.
