Early Life
Kerry Marisa Washington was born in The Bronx, New York City, on 31st January 1977. Her mother Valerie was a professor and educational consultant, while her father Earl was a real estate broker. She studied at the Spence School in Manhattan & graduated from high school in 1994. Youth Theater group.
Soon after that, she pursued her higher education at George Washington University, graduating in 1998 with a double major in anthropology and sociology. After that, she returned to her alma mater in 2013 & served as the commencement speaker for that year’s graduation ceremony. She was then presented with a Doctorate of Fine Arts.
Career
Her first on-screen role was in the ABC telefilm “Magical Make-Over” (1994). After that in “Our Song” (2000), “Save the Last Dance” (2001), “Bad Company” (2002), and “The Human Stain” (2003). Her first major role was in Spike Lee’s “She Hate Me” (2004), which earned strong positive reviews from her fans.
She then acted in “Mr. & Mrs Smith” (2005), “Little Man” (2006), “Fantastic Four” (2005), “The Last King of Scotland” (2006), and “I Think I Love My Wife” (2007). She also had a small role as Chelina Hall on the ABC series “Boston Legal”, and a guest appearance lasting a few episodes on the A&B show “100 Centre Street”. Other television shows she has appeared on include “Law and Order”, “Psych”, and “NYPD Blue”.
In 2007, she co-directed and performed in the music video for hip-hop artist Common’s song, “I Want You”, the fourth single from his album Finding Forever and became a spokesperson for L’Oréal, appearing in commercials and ads with Scarlett Johansson and Eva Longoria, Gong Li, Michelle Yeoh, Dian Sastrowardoyo, Aishwarya Rai, Maya Karin and model Doutzen Kroes.
In 2010, she made her stage debut in David Mamet’s “Race” on Broadway. That same year, she also acted in Tyler Perry’s film “For Colored Girls”. For her performance in “Django Unchained” (2012), she was invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in June 2012. In the most remarkable roles in her career, Washington gave her performance in the ABC drama series “Scandal” from 2012 to 2018 as crisis manager Olivia Pope. The show, created by Shonda Rhimes, was a huge commercial and critical success. For her performance on the show, she won the Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series Award at the 44th NAACP Image Awards in 2013.
That same year, she was presented with the NAACP President’s Award, named as TV Guide Magazine’s “Favorite actress”, selected for the magazine as 2013’2 “TV star of the year”. Along with that Washington was nominated for an Emmy at both the 65th and 66th Primetime Emmy Awards, making her the first African-American woman to be nominated in the category of Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Other nominations she received for “Scandal” include a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Television Drama Series.
Soon after this, she acted in the HBO movie “Confirmation” (2016), directed by Rick Famuyiwa. The film is based on the story of the testimony of Anita Hill during Clarence Thomas’s Supreme Court nomination. She was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie at the 68th Primetime Emmy Award, and for the equivalent award at that year’s Critics’ Choice Awards. In 2020, she performed with Reese Witherspoon in the Hulu show “Little Fires Everywhere”, and she also served as executive producer. The show was based on Celeste Ng’s novel of the same name.
