One year after college basketball with the Kansas Jayhawks, Joel Embiid was drafted third overall by the 76ers in the 2014 NBA draft.

Early Life
He was born in Yaoundé, Cameroon, to his parents Thomas Embiid and Christine. He played volleyball and soccer in his childhood but started playing basketball at the age of fifteen years old. He moved to the United States at age sixteen years old to become a professional basketball player.

College Career
Joel studied at the University of Kansas for one year with his teammate Andrew Wiggins. On 13th February 2014, he was named one of the 30 finalists for the Naismith College Player of the Year. In 2013–14, he played 28 games, averaging 11.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 2.6 blocks in 23.1 minutes per game.
Professional Career
2014 NBA draft
In April 2014, Joel declared for the 2014 NBA draft, forgoing his final three years of college eligibility. Then unfortunately he underwent surgery on a broken navicular bone in his right foot and was out of the team for four to six months. He was then selected with the third overall pick by the Philadelphia 76ers. This selection made him the third Cameroonian-born NBA player after Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje and Luc Mbah-a-Moute.

Two years later in 2016, he started at center in the 76ers’ first preseason game against the Boston Celtics. In his first match, he recorded six points, four rebounds and two blocks in 13 minutes en route to a 92–89 victory.On 1st November, he recorded his first career double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds in a 103–101 loss to the Orlando Magic.
On 11th November, his 25-point effort helped the 76ers claim their first win of the season, by defeating the Indiana Pacers 109–105.On 3rd January 2017, Joel was named Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month for games played in December.
2019–20 season
On 25th November 2019, he grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds but went scoreless in an NBA game for the first time in his career in the 76ers’ 101–96 loss to the Toronto Raptors. On 20th February 2020, he scored 39 points, along with 16 rebounds, to lead Philadelphia to a 112–104 overtime win against the Brooklyn Nets.
2023–24 season
On 6th November 2023, Joel posted 48 points, 11 rebounds and 6 assists on 17–25 shooting from the field in a 146–128 victory over the Washington Wizards. He scored 29 points on 10–10 shooting in the 3rd quarter, joining LeBron James and Klay Thompson as the only players since the 1997–98 season to shoot 10-for-10 or better in a quarter.
Joel also recorded his sixth 45-point, 10-rebound, 5-assist game, passing Wilt Chamberlain for most in Sixers history. Apart from this, he also became the first player in the shot clock era to have 45 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists while being on the court for less than 31 minutes.
On 20th December, he scored a season-high 51 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in a 127–113 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves.
2024–25 season
On 21st November 2024, it was reported that in a meeting involving players and coaches, Tyrese Maxey called him out for being regularly late to team activities. Maxey also said that his tardiness affects everyone, from the coaches to the players.

Joel’s younger brother, Arthur, died on 16th October 2014, in a car crash in his home country of Cameroon. He also has a younger sister.
