Who is Mirabai Chanu?
She is an Indian weightlifter and has won Silver Medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Women’s 49 kg. She won “The world championship” and various medals in the Commonwealth games. She was awarded the fourth highest civilian honor of India “ Padma Shri” & the highest Sporting award the “Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award” by the Government of India in 2018 for her wonderful contribution to Indian Sports.

Early Life
She was born on 8th August 1994 in Imphal, Manipur state of India. Her father’s name is Saikhom Kriti Meitei & mother’s name is Saikohm Ongbi Tombi Leima. She attended the Nongpok Kakching Government High School for her school education.
Career
After that, she qualified for The 2016 Summer Olympics in the Women’s 48 kg. Unfortunately, she failed to finish the event. After that next year in 2017 at “The World Weightlifting Championships”, she won the gold medal in the Women’s 48 kg category by lifting a competition record 194 kg in total.
In June 2021 she became the only Indian woman weightlifter to qualify for The 2020 Summer Olympics secured her second position on the Absolute Rankings for the 49kg category. She won the silver medal in The Women’s 49 kg at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo with a total lift of 202 kg. She becoming the first Indian weightlifter to win silver at the Olympics and the second Indian weightlifter after Retired Indian weightlifter Karnam Malleswari. She makes a new Olympic record with a successful lift of 115kg in clean and jerk. Her home state Government announced an award of $ 134,781 (Rs 1 Cr) for her. Indian Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced an award of $ 269,570 (Rs 2 Cr) a promotion and more for her.
She has made many records in her name which are as follows
- She is a female weight lifter who won the gold medal in the 48 kg category at the 2017 World Weightlifting Championships.
- In 2018 she got India the first gold by winning gold in the Commonwealth Games.
- She was also selected in the 2016 Rio Olympics, but unfortunately, she could not bring any medals for India during this period.
- She also won the Gold Medal in the 12th South Asian Games which was organised in Guwahati in the year 2016.
- Honour: Due to her good performance and dedication in sports, the Chief Minister of Manipur also gave him an amount of $ 26,962 (Rs 20 lakhs).
